Team

The research team is supervised by Augusto Soares da Silva and is composed of the following members: José João Dias Almeida, Alberto Manuel Simões, Ana Margarida Abrantes and also Ana Margarida Nunes, Marlene Danaia Duarte and José Luiz de Lucca who were awarded a research grant.


Augusto Soares da Silva
Augusto Soares da Silva is associate professor of Linguistics at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Portuguese Catholic University, in Braga. He obtained his Ph.D in Portuguese Linguistics in 1997 with a thesis about the cognitive perspective in lexical semantics, under the supervision of Dirk Geeraerts (University of Leuven). His mains research interests include cognitive semantics, lexical semantics, lexicology and cognitive grammar. His publications deal with issues like polysemy, verb semantics, categorization and prototypes, semantic change, lexical variation, metaphor and metonymy, causation, causative constructions, grammaticalization and inflected infinitive. He is the author of A Semântica de Deixar: uma Contribuição para a Abordagem Cognitiva em Semântica Lexical [The Semantics of the Verb Deixar: Towards a Cognitive Approach in Lexical Semantics] (Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, 1999) and the editor of two books about Cognitive Linguistics.

José João Dias Almeida
José João Dias Almeida is assistant professor at the Information Technology Department of the University of Minho. He is the supervisor of the Natura Project for Natural Language Processing, with particular emphasis on the Portuguese language.

Alberto Manuel Simões
Alberto Manuel Simões is a graduate student in Mathematics and Computation Sciences. He obtained his Master’s degree in 2004 with a thesis about Parallel Corpora word alignment and applications from the School of Engineering of the University of Minho. He is now a Ph.D student in the same institution in the field of automatic translation based on examples.

Ana Margarida Abrantes
Ana Margarida Abrantes is assistant in the field of German Studies at the Faculty of Arts of the Catholic University in Viseu. She holds a graduate degree in English and German from the University of Aveiro (1997) and a Master’s degree in Portuguese Linguistics – Cognitive Perspective from the Faculty of Philosophy of the Catholic University of Braga (2001). She is now doing her Ph.D in the field of Cognitive Semiotics. She published the book É a Guerra. O Uso do Eufemismo na Imprensa – Um Estudo Contrastivo em Linguística Cognitiva (Passagem Editores, Viseu, 2002).

Ana Margarida Nunes
Ana Margarida Nunes holds a graduate degree in Portuguese Language Teaching from the University of Minho (2000) and a Master’s degree in Portuguese Studies (Portuguese Linguistics) from the University of Aveiro (2003). She was awarded a research grant for the project from 1st March 2004 to 28th February 2005. She is a member of the Research Line in Language Sciences of the University of Aveiro.

Marlene Danaia Duarte
Marlene Danaia Duarte holds a graduate degree in Applied Foreign Languages (English-Portuguese) from Lumière Lyon II University (1999) and an M.Phil. degree in English Studies from Liverpool John Moores University (2002). She was awarded a research grant for the project from 1st March 2005 to 31st March 2006.

José Luiz de Lucca
José Luiz de Lucca holds a graduate degree in Economic Studies from the Pontific Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (1984) and obtained his PhD in Linguistics from the University of São Paulo (2001), with a thesis about minidictionaries for the Portuguese language. He was awarded a 10-month research grant for the project.
